CNet reports that Other World Computing has stopped distributing their DVD Enabler software -- a product that patched Apple's iDVD software to permit a user to burn DVDs on external DVD burners. The product was seen as a boon to thousands of Mac customers who discovered that although Apple bundled iDVD with their Macs, they couldn't save their movies to DVD unless they had an Apple SuperDrive. By using DVD Enabler, Mac users could purchase a third-party DVD burner and make full use of iDVD. Apple saw DVD Enabler in a different light -- as a dangerous program that encouraged software piracy and discouraged customers from buying expensive SuperDrive-equipped Macs. Apple threatened OWC with legal action and OWC promptly discontinued distribution of DVD Enabler. Apple invoked the Digital Millenium Copyright Act in their threats against OWC. It is a touch ironic that they would do so, considering that the DMCA is an important tool of the Recording Industry Association of America, a group that frequently clashes with Apple over Apple's iTunes and Disc Burner software.
