Apple to Offer Music Downloads Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 March 2003 12:08

The Los Angeles Times has reported that Apple will soon offer a music-downloading service that is compatible with both iTunes and the Apple iPod.

The music files will not be available in mp3 format, but will be encoded using Dolby's AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) technology, which is supposed to limit the playback of the music to the specific computer that the files are downloaded onto and a single iPod. AAC has been incorporated into QuickTime 6 and the MPEG 4 Specification.

If Apple does deploy this service, it will be the first time that the music industry has supported a commercial music download service on the Mac platform. The struggling PressPlay and MusicNet are industry-supported music download sites that cater to Windows users, but due to their extravagant prices, poor encoding quality, limited portability of the encoded files and minute selection of tunes, they do not attract many users.

One must wonder whether Apple is capable of creating a successful music service, given that the recording companies are inevitably going to push the same lame proprietary content upon Mac users as they do upon PC users.

OLD COMMENTS

It may be lame, but Mac users will buy anything that Apple foists on them. Look at dot-Mac. You're a bunch of brainless zombies. When Steve says jump, you ask how high.

It's only lame if it's not true so why do you bother. Anyways, this rumored Apple service actually sounds really good except for one major flaw -- it's still giving money to the recording oligopoly! So I won't be buying for awhile. besides, i'm having too much fun enjoying the works of independents. I'm trying to get away from depending upon the big guys for all of my entertainment.
