In my last post, I wrote about helping a person to get Classic running again under OS X 10.3.4. A couple of things that I should have stressed were that I was talking her through the whole process on the phone and her computer skills weren't very strong. Rather than replacing her Classic Startup application with the older version, I could have had her locate and manually install each of the Classic components that the new Classic Startup application was looking for. These components are located inside the Classic Startup application package. In Panther, the files are in an invisible folder called Universal Forks at this path: /System/Library/CoreServices/Classic Startup/Contents/Resources/Universal Forks The best way to navigate to the invisible folder is to enter the full path using the Go To Folder command from the Finder's Go menu. If you have ever had to deal with a problem like this then you will understand why I just had her replace the Classic Startup application with a version that was already known to work on her computer. Even assuming that I could successfully take her through the steps of replacing the Classic components with new ones, it was not clear that installing those components would solve the problem. If I had her computer in front of me at the time, I would have first tried to install the new Classic components individually. If that didn't work then the next thing would have been to replace her Classic Startup application with the old version.
