While perusing the collection on illegal-art.org I came across an entertaining piece of conceptual art by Kembrew McLeod. It seems that Mr. McLeod managed to get a trademark on the phrase "Freedom of Expression" and staged an infringement. His lawyer wasn't in on the gag and sent a cease-and-desist notice. This is the quote that had me in stitches: This letter, therefore, constitutes formal notice of your infringement of our client’s trademark rights and a demand that you refrain from all further use of Freedom of Expression. Trademarks are not permitted for words and phrases that are commonly used or are valuable to the public. It appears that the Patent and Trademark Office doesn't consider freedom of expression to be of any value.
