Play AVI Files on Your Mac Print E-mail
Friday, 28 June 2002 00:57
If you download multimedia files, you should have this software.

Version 5.0 DivX video drivers for the Mac OS are available in pre-release form at this URL:
http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

The 5.0 Alpha 2 DivX installer gives you both the latest decoder extension and a revised "DivX Validator" application that fixes many of the audio-sync problems that could cause the audio tracks in AVI files to stop playing in the QuickTime Player. Keep in mind that the software is still in the testing phase and could cause your Mac to crash.

The DivX Validator application converts DivX-encoded AVI files to a format that will play properly on Macs with QuickTime as well as PCs running Windows.

While you're grabbing files, you should download a program called DivX Doctor here:
http://doctor.3ivx.com/

DivX doctor is another application that converts DivX encoded AVI files so that they will play under QuickTime. Unlike the DivX validator, DivX Doctor will convert your AVI files to normal QuickTime movie files.

Both applications are handy and one may work where the other fails.

QuickTime 6 purports to play DivX encoded files, but it has two major drawbacks: first, the QT6 Preview is very buggy; and second, it only plays DivX files that conform closely to the MP4 specifications, and it will usually choke on the poorly-encoded files that are generated on Windows machines.
